Interviewer: Willie, Thank you for taking the time. To begin with, can you shed light on your journey into corporate law? What inspired you to choose this path?

Willie: Thank you for having me! My corporate law journey has been somewhat unconventional. I studied International relations at University due to my passion for global diplomacy. However, I got an internship at a Law Firm, where I was fascinated by how legal frameworks have a bearing on strategic decisions and business operations. As a result, my focus shifted, and I ended up attending law school, where I pursued corporate law.

Interviewer: That is interesting! Please share some practical experiences that have shaped your career.

Willie: The most formative experience was working on a high-stakes merger between two tech giants. The pressure was intense, with strict deadlines and significant financial implications. I learned the importance of thorough due diligence, clear communication, and teamwork. The other experience was advising a startup on compliance and the unique challenges that small businesses face compared to large corporations.

Interviewer: What are the requirements for people looking to enter the field of corporate law?

Willie: First, an academic foundation is necessary. Law firms hire people with a Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an accredited law school. Additionally, one needs practical experience from internships. That is why I encourage aspiring lawyers to stay ahead of the curve.

Willie: Courses in intellectual property, business organizations, and contracts are essential. Acquiring knowledge in emerging areas like cryptocurrency and fintech can also be a significant advantage.

Willie: There is potential for development as businesses become globalized. A lawyer with expertise in international corporate law will have an advantage. AI will create opportunities for lawyers to handle strategic roles.

Willie: There is a shift towards a more interdisciplinary collaboration. We will see lawyers working alongside professionals from various fields like finance and technology. Since the legal landscape is evolving, it is important to stay adaptable.

Interviewer: How can lawyers stay up-to-date on developments in the legal field, and how can they continually grow and learn in the profession?

Willie: Online resources are a great way to stay updated on regulatory, recent case laws, statutory, or other updates. Additionally, professional organizations related to different practice areas are a great way to stay updated. Such organizations publish newsletters or host CLE events touching on recent developments.

Interviewer:  How can young lawyers set themselves up for success?

Willie: It starts with developing good habits such as billing time promptly, communicating effectively, time management, answering emails, and generally being responsive. Such habits, once established, will serve you throughout your career. The other hack is to show ownership and initiative of matters and tasks assigned to you. Think creatively and offer suggestions and thoughts as you address issues. Networking internally within your organization will help you progress early in your career.

Interviewer: What are some of the challenges that lawyers face in their careers?

Willie: Aspiring lawyers struggle to determine which area of law they want to specialize in. It takes time to find out which area one wants to concentrate on. It is advisable to try different paths and talk to as many lawyers as possible. They will provide the necessary insights on which career path is best for you.

Interviewer: What types of career paths are available to lawyers?

Willie: There are plenty of career paths to choose from, starting with the traditional path of working at a big law firm. However, most lawyers go into public interest and work on matters regarding public interest. Other options include compliance, academia, government, arbitration and mediation, or legal recruiting. Keep an open mind as you explore the available options. It is all about your passion, skills, interests, and goals.
