From School Contests to AI Dreams: Charting a Technological Odyssey in IT
Introduction
Huy is a 3rd-year junior of Computer Science at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) with notable strides in his tech career. Starting as a Customer Support Engineer at IVS Joint Stock Company, he developed strong troubleshooting skills and managed diverse IT administrative issues. He then transitioned to a Developer Intern role at iTechwx Company Limited, where he gained hands-on experience in coding, debugging, and software testing. Driven by a strong commitment to software development, Huy aspires to lead a company that specializes in pioneering AI-integrated products.
What sparked your interest in technology and AI initially?
My adventure with technology started in secondary school, where my aptitude for computing quickly became apparent. It was a genuine passion that was nurtured by a supportive teacher who saw potential in me and encouraged my curiosity. I vividly recall the thrill of participating in a school computing contest and earning a second-place finish. That moment was more than a proud achievement; it was a turning point that set the course for my future endeavours.
As high school came to a close, I faced the formidable challenge of choosing a university path that would align with my interests and aspirations. This decision was not taken lightly; it involved meticulous research and a deep reflection on a singular goal: to create technology breakthroughs capable of making a significant impact on major industries and everyday life. With this vision in mind, I embarked on a path that promised to be as challenging as it was rewarding, setting the stage for a career dedicated to advancing the frontiers of technology.
In exploring the vast field of Computer Science, I found myself particularly drawn to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The concept of developing systems that could emulate human intelligence and bring about revolutionary changes in various aspects of modern life was nothing short of exhilarating. I envisioned AI not just as a field of study, but as a canvas where I could blend my technical capabilities with innovative ideas to drive meaningful changes. It became clear that AI was the perfect synthesis of my academic strengths and ambition to make a difference in the world.
What was your entry point into the professional world of IT?
My journey took a decisive turn during the third year of university, when I decided to balance a full-time job with my academic responsibilities. Driven by the desire to gain practical experience and complement my theoretical knowledge, I made the bold decision to step into the professional world while still pursuing my studies. My solid foundation in computer science played a crucial role in securing this role, but it came at the cost of slowing my academic progress slightly. Despite the difficulties, this choice was a testament to my dedication to both my education and my career aspirations.
My first role in the field was as a Customer Support Engineer on the IT help desk. This position immersed me in a world of troubleshooting and problem-solving. My days were filled with addressing customer queries through various channels, diagnosing technical issues, and providing solutions to ensure minimal disruption. The role required me to offer guidance on product usage, troubleshoot configurations, and meticulously record resolutions. I was also exposed to the dynamics of service skills, email communication, office workflows, and even the intricacies of insurance and HR processes.
How did you eventually change direction and get to your current position?
While I acquired a wealth of experience, the service-oriented nature of the role led me to question my long-term career path. I yearned for a more direct impact on the development process rather than remaining in a support capacity. This introspection prompted me to pivot my career direction and embrace new opportunities. With a renewed sense of purpose, I changed from customer support to a Developer Intern. My new responsibilities included writing and debugging code, which allowed me to engage hands-on with the software development process. I also assisted in testing software, ensuring that it met quality standards and functioned as intended. Documenting processes and participating in team meetings further enriched my experience, providing insights into collaborative development and project management.
The transition was both exhilarating and challenging. It marked a return to the core of my passion—coding and innovating rather than just supporting. The hands-on experience I gained as a Developer Intern reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in software development and deepened my appreciation for the intricate process of building and refining technology. This role was a crucial step in my journey, shaping my future aspirations and pushing me closer to my goal of developing impactful AI-integrated products.
Looking back, what made you decide to enter the workforce at such an early stage? What were the key takeaways from these experiences?
The driving factor behind my decision to start working early stemmed from my eagerness to gain real-world experience. While my studies provided a robust theoretical framework, there were moments of uncertainty and self-doubt about my chosen path. Fortunately, I was able to work in a vibrant and dynamic environment that was immensely supportive of my growth. The company offered me a chance to explore various facets of IT, from cloud computing to remote desktop services. Although my career trajectory has since evolved beyond my initial role, the knowledge I gained during this period was invaluable. Exposing to different technologies and workflows has provided a firm base that continues to benefit my current focus on coding, as IT continues to evolve in these areas. This early start not only enhanced my technical abilities but also helped me build confidence and adaptability—traits that have been instrumental in navigating the ever-changing landscape of technology.
One crucial lesson I learned from my early experiences is the importance of a strong foundation in logical thinking and programming. Technology and programming languages may change over time, but a solid programming mindset makes it easier to stay updated and learn new languages. This principle also mirrors the importance of effective communication skills and critical thinking for personal growth and societal connection. By embracing new languages and applying our thinking, we can build international relationships and expand our horizons. The ability to navigate and contribute to international projects fosters valuable relationships and expands our horizons, making us more adaptable and innovative in our approach. This mindset, cultivated through early experiences and continuous learning, is pivotal for thriving in the ever-evolving landscape of IT and achieving long-term success in the field.
Where do you see yourself in the IT realm in the next ten years?
Looking ahead, my vision for the future is both ambitious and focused. In ten years’ time, I see myself at the helm of a company dedicated to developing AI-integrated products that not only enhance but also revolutionize everyday life. My dream is to create technology that not only addresses current challenges but also anticipates future needs, offering innovative solutions to improve the quality of life.
The IT industry is vast and demands a clear sense of direction with unwavering commitment. It is not just about having a broad understanding of technology; it is about setting specific goals and relentlessly pursuing them. This mindset has been integral to my personal and professional growth, and it will continue to guide me while I work towards my long-term objectives. With each step forward, I carry along the lessons learned, the experiences gained, and the resilience to push boundaries and drive progress. My story is an ongoing narrative of growth and ambition, and I am excited to see how the chapters ahead unfold for the better.
