What led you to the field of Health Science?
Life has a way of leading us down to unexpected paths; and for me, the field of Health Science was a destination I stumbled upon by fate. Growing up with a gentle and caring nature, coupled with a deep love for children, those around me believed I was destined to become a teacher. I also envisioned a future career in education, until a global event shifted my perspective and reshaped my destiny.
The Covid-19 pandemic, with its widespread impact and urgency, became a turning point in my life during my 12th grade year. Witnessing the severe consequences of the virus and the immense challenges faced by healthcare workers ignited a newfound passion within me. The idea of contributing to society’s well-being and helping restore people’s health became a compelling drive. It was then that I realized that Health Science was not just a field I was drawn to but a calling that resonated deeply with my personal values and aspirations.
The unwavering support from my family, friends, and teachers played a crucial role in helping me navigate this transition. Determined to make an informed decision, I immersed myself in researching Health Science, exploring its various facets, and understanding its implications for public health. This period of self-discovery and preparation allowed me to clarify my goals and solidify my commitment to this field.
Health Science often involves a more intense workload and greater time commitment than many other majors. So how was your university life?
Entering university marked the beginning of an exhilarating new chapter in my Health Science journey. In the initial years, the focus was heavily on theoretical knowledge across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including general medicine, pharmacy, medical imaging, anesthesia, and resuscitation. The program was complemented by extensive practice in blood collection techniques, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, and parasitology, often pushing me beyond my comfort zone and requiring intense focus and dedication.
The heavy curriculum was crucial for building a solid foundation in medical science, but it also presented a challenge: during my first and second years, there was little room for hands-on experience through internships. This phase of my education was largely confined to textbooks and lectures, requiring a significant commitment to mastering complex concepts and developing a deep understanding of various health-related disciplines.
However, I understood that the transition from theory to practice would be pivotal in my development as a healthcare professional. To bridge this gap, I proactively sought out opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting to enhance my skills and knowledge like workshops, seminars, and talkshows at the university. Balancing these extracurricular activities with the demands of my coursework required careful time management and perseverance. It taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability—qualities that are essential for success in the demanding healthcare field.
Which extracurricular activities had the most significant impact on your learning experience?
University also provided me with the opportunity to work as a volunteer in different hospital departments, a role that became a cornerstone of my learning experience. In the laboratory, I observed and assisted with routine tests and analyses, gaining insights into the meticulous nature of diagnostic work. In the ultrasound and X-ray rooms, I witnessed the critical role of imaging in diagnosing and monitoring patient conditions. Customer care and registration tasks offered a glimpse into the administrative side of healthcare, highlighting the importance of effective communication and organizational skills.
This diverse exposure was crucial in helping me understand the various facets of healthcare delivery. Each department had its unique challenges and workflows, and navigating these complexities taught me the importance of adaptability and versatility in a healthcare setting. The ability to understand and manage different aspects of patient care was instrumental in preparing me for the multifaceted nature of a career in Health Science.
Having said that, the experience was not without its challenges. One of the most pressing issues was the high volume of patients. The sheer number of individuals seeking care could be overwhelming, and the pressure of managing these demands with limited resources often tested my resilience. There were times when the influx of patients created a sense of chaos, requiring swift and efficient responses to ensure that everyone received the care they needed. Additionally, exposure to numerous pathogens posed significant health risks. Working in close proximity to patients with various illnesses meant that I had to adhere strictly to infection control protocols to protect both myself and the patients.
In the face of demanding situations, the ability to remain composed and empathetic was crucial for delivering high-quality patient care. Moreover, the experience underscored the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Working alongside healthcare professionals and fellow volunteers, I learned to appreciate the role of each team member in providing comprehensive care and achieving optimal outcomes.
Amidst the chaos and pressure, the thought of creating a tangible difference in patients’ lives was a powerful motivator to me. Witnessing the gratitude and smiles of patients amidst the demanding environment provided a sense of fulfillment that transcended the difficulties. Their positive responses and satisfaction with the care they received further reaffirmed my commitment to contribute positively to the society.
How do you plan to contribute to the progress of Health Science?
The healthcare landscape, with its rapid technological advancements and evolving treatment methodologies, demands that I stay at the cutting edge of these developments. This commitment goes beyond mere professional responsibility; it is a reflection of my personal dedication to delivering the most effective and innovative care possible. By continuously updating my knowledge and embracing new technologies, I aim to not only keep pace with the field but to actively contribute to its progress, ensuring that every patient receives the highest standard of care.
As I look towards the future, I am particularly excited about the potential for interdisciplinary integration, specifically the convergence of Health Science and Psychology. The holistic approach of combining physical and mental health aligns with my belief that comprehensive patient care requires attention to both aspects of well-being. Addressing mental health alongside physical health can lead to more effective treatments, improved patient outcomes, and a healthier community overall. By advancing my knowledge in both Health Science and Psychology, I aim to contribute to a more nuanced and compassionate approach to healthcare.
What are your long-term goals in the future?
My journey to choosing Health Science as a major has been one of discovery, passion, and resilience. This path is marked by both challenges and triumphs, guided by a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact. As I advance in my career, I am driven by a profound sense of purpose and dedication. My goal is to continuously expand my knowledge, embrace emerging challenges, and collaborate with like-minded professionals who share my passion for advancing healthcare. By prioritizing holistic care, I aim to address both physical and mental health needs, contributing to a future where comprehensive well-being is accessible to all. With an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning and innovation, I am ready to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape.
